Schoolgirl dies in hospital, teacher's corporal punishment suspected  Meheknad

Uppala (Kasargod): A 11-year-old class 6 student, who was under medical care after alleged corporal punishment at school, passed away in the wee hours of Tuesday. Meheknad, daughter of Abdul Khader and Mehrunnisa from Karnataka, who lived in a rented house in Manimunda, died around 3am at a relative's house in Perinkada.

Authorities ordered an autopsy, considering the mystery surrounding her death. Meheknad was under treatment after a teacher at her school hit her on the head. The Manjeswaram police filed a case of unnatural death. A public activist had sought a police inquiry into the alleged beating-up in school. At the same time, Manjeswaram additional sub-inspector P. Anoop said the child's family had not filed any complaint. The police, however, were gathering detailed information from the school as well as the family on the allegation.

The child was admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru on August 28 and was discharged on September 5. But she developed complications later and died.

Meheknad's body is a the Pariyaram Medical College mortuary since a police surgeon wasn't available on Tuesday for a post-mortem examination. It will take place Tuesday.
