Green protocol to be strictly enforced during Pongala The Pongala will be held on March 2.

Thiruvananthapuram: The city corporation has decided to strictly enforce green protocol during the Attukal Pongala festival, meaning which, plastic items used for drinking water supply and free food distribution would be seized. Instead, people have been advised to make use of steel cups, plates etc. The authorities have also sought sponsors for supplying the steel items. The Pongala will be held on March 2.

After Pongala, the cups and other steel items would be stored by the corporation and rented out. Mayor V K Prasanth said that special counters would be opened at banks and national service scheme units in the city to collect the steel vessels from sponsors. The corporation will also set up stalls at East Fort and Putharikandam during the festival days to supply eco-friendly items.

Elaborate campaigns will be charted out with the cooperation of the Suchitwa Mission to spread the message of green protocol across the state. Other planned programs include regular announcements regarding the green protocol at railway stations and bus stands, advertisements on FM radio and distribution of notices among the public. Moreover, cloth bags would be distributed and green kiosks opened at East Fort and Thampanoor bus stands.

Drinking water kiosks would also be set up near major banks and popular business establishments on the pongala day. The Attukal Temple Trust has been directed to issue advertisements urging devotees to avoid plastic disposable items and use steel utensils while offering the pongala. The meeting also decided to make registration compulsory for the temporary shops which come up during the festival.

The mayor said those interested in sponsoring items and offering other services could contact on 9496434434, 9496434461 or 9496434492.
