No money for treatment, KSRTC pensioner dies Roy, 59, son of the late Valiyaparambil Varijakshan, Puthuvype in Ernakulam district, was suffering from cardiac ailments for long.

Elamkunnapuzha, Kochi: A former employee of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), who was denied the monthly pension for five months, died after being unable to undergo treatment due to financial constraints.

Roy, 59, son of the late Valiyaparambil Varijakshan, Puthuvype in Ernakulam district, was suffering from cardiac ailments for long. A couple of months ago, doctors at the Medical College Hospital, Vandanam, had advised him to undergo an emergency cardiac bypass surgery.

However, the family could not afford the surgery costing at least Rs 1.5 lakh.

As a result, he opted for ayurvedic treatment but that too was discontinued after a while due to lack of money. The financial crisis and the deteriorating health condition had put Roy under severe trauma, his relatives said.

Though he was rushed to the General Hospital in Ernakulam after he complained of chest pain on Tuesday morning, his life could not be saved.

Roy’s wife Bindu, who works as a domestic help, became the sole breadwinner of the family ever since he retired from the KSRTC around three-and-a-half years ago after completing 31 years of service. The KSRTC has not dispensed the pending pension benefits to him yet, the relatives added.

The couple has two children, Sindhya and Bindhya. The elder daughter has been married off, while the younger child is in class 10. The family has been struggling to make ends meet and fund the children’s education.
